Community centres in focus as Ontario backs 3 construction projects worth $123M

The Ontario government has announced tens of millions in funding for a trio of community centres in Mississauga, Barrie and Bracebridge.

The two new construction projects and one reconstruction job were all announced earlier this week, with the province committing $90 million to the total $123 million in project costs.

The largest project in Mississauga covers the reconstruction of the South Common Community Centre and Library. The upgraded facility will house a 16,000 sq. ft. library, as well as include expanded indoor and outdoor fitness spaces, an aquatics centre and a new gym. The project is worth $61 million.

In Barrie, crews will get to work on a $40 million community hub. To be operated by the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka, the site will have recreation areas, licensed childcare space, a youth centre, and a rehabilitation space for cardiac and cancer post care patients.

A multi-use community centre is also planned for Bracebridge. The planned facility has a total price tag of $22 million and includes a 1,000 seat arena, a public library, a community hall and a multi-use field house.
